Jacob Chandler

Artist and Sculptor, Ambassador since September 2022

Chandler’s work focuses on movement, physical power and prowess, the impetus for this study stems from Chandler’s own struggles with physical health. Suffering with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and colitis he was forced at thirteen to step back from a physically active lifestyle, becoming almost bedbound. Through careful behavioral therapy, managed activity levels, combined with diligent physio he is now pursuing his dream career as a sculptor.

Flairs in the conditions forced Chandler to defer his formal study of architecture but this in itself, is what has led him down this career path. The work Chandlerproduces tries to capture the fleeting moments of extreme dynamism in elite athletes; there are several reasons for this study. In a way it is envy of physical prowess, on the other is an attempt to grasp the psychological difficulties of athletes whose career span is often so limited. Their frailty despite being at the pinnacle of their professional prowess is hinted at as the poses used are often impossible to hold for long. The emotional identity of these athletes is  intrinsically linked to their physicality which is inherently as fragile as the poses they hold. This feels similar to the day to day for Chandler with one day being able to keep pace with the best and the next having to put on the breaks and recoup.

It took over a decade from Chandler’s deterioration into chronic health to be diagnosed. EDS is not commonly known about and if it weren’t for members of his family doing hours of research into their own condition he feels he would still be looking for answers. Chandler is keen to raise awareness about EDS, most importantly, he feels it’s really important for people to not feel alone, to allow others struggling with any chronic health condition that it’s ok to give yourself a break to recuperate.

We all have bad days, fears and worries but for me pursuing my dream has almost become therapeutic.

I enter my own little zen space when I sculpt, this can be the best form of escapism and pain relief. I am lucky to be able to turn what nurtures me into a career. I wouldn’t be here if not for the adversities caused by EDS and colitis but through these trying times I have found so much joy. Find what makes you happy.
