In winter 2021, EDS UK launched its Community Champion Awards and we have been delighted to present nine Community Awards over the past two years on behalf of our members.
We are delighted to announce two new award winners; Kathryn Berg, Trial Manager in the Centre for Genomics and Experimental Medicine at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer in the University of Edinburgh and Dervil Dockrell, Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist in the Rheumatic Diseases unit at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer in the University of Edinburgh.
They were presented for their contribution to furthering research and supporting those with the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders in Scotland. Kathryn and Dervil were nominated by Anne Sutherland and Michele Goldie, our Lead Scotland volunteers.
Dervil and Kathryn have offered support to the volunteers in Scotland for several years as we attempt to work with the NHS and the Scottish Government in raising awareness of EDS and trying to make change. They presented their work on ‘Scottish Therapists’ Experiences of Managing Symptomatic Hypermobility’ at our EDS UK event at the Scottish Parliament and continually look for research opportunities whilst raising awareness and providing invaluable support to Anne in her role as Engagement Lead.

The awards are open to public places, businesses and non-profit organisations, education establishments and to recognise individual products. Nominations must be made by someone living with EDS or HSD or a family member, friend or carer. Once a nomination has been received, we will contact the organisation to find out more about them and to discuss the potential award. EDS UK Community Champions will receive a certificate and plaque (if they want one) and be listed in Fragile Links and across our digital platforms.
