Over the weekend of 24th and 25th September 2016 Timperley Boneshakers completed their annual charity cycling challenge. Pedalling through some fantastic scenery across the Cheshire plains and Shropshire countryside, into the Welsh border then staying overnight in Shrewsbury, returning back to Timperley on the Sunday.
The Challenge was open to male and female cyclists and consisted of an 85, 100, 120 or 140 mile challenge on day 1, followed by a 75 mile ride home on day 2.
This was a personal challenge for many of the cyclists of different abilities, some of whom had never undertaken anything like this before.
Sophie Needham, the niece of one of the cyclists, suffers with EDS, so it was agreed by the team of 30 cyclists that this year EDS UK would benefit from their annual September Cycling Challenge. Sophie’s family were keen to raise funds EDS UK as they have received valuable support from the charity over the past few years.
Whilst the Timperley Boneshakers managed to smash their £10K target and raise a significant amount of money, many of them struggled from the start to raise funds for a charity that isn’t so well known. They said “It is probably the fact that not many people are aware of this charity or indeed people that suffer with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. We can’t thank our sponsors enough, many of whom put their hands in their pockets every year to support us”.
To date, since 2009, Timperley Boneshakers Charity Cycling Events have raised over £93K for several deserving charities, benefitting:
- Parkinson’s Disease Association
- Stroke
- Prostate Cancer
- The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust
- Institute of Cancer Research (Faye’s Wish)
- Cardiac Risk in the Young
- The Ehlers-Danlos Support UK
